More reliability and higher performance for your solar system –
with half-cell solar modules (half-cut solar cells)
What is half-cut technology?
Half-cell solar modules (half-cut modules) are photovoltaic modules that consist of solar cells cut in half.
This generation of solar cells offers advanced properties and advantages.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) has discovered that half-cell modules achieve 2-3 % more output compared to modules with conventional full cells, even though they are made of the same material.
In contrast to a normal solar cell (full cell), the reduction in size of half cells results in a lower current.
Splitting the solar cells reduces the current per solar cell by half.
The mathematical formula provides the exact power loss of solar cells.
This is reduced by the half-cut technology – a significant advantage that is demonstrated here.

(The power losses in a half-cell module are reduced by a factor of four, as the power loss is calculated from the product of the line resistance and the current squared).
Solar modules with lower power losses have a higher efficiency and therefore achieve higher solar yields.
Advantages of half-cut cell technology
Increased energy yield
Higher efficiency & fill factor
Optimized temperature behavior
The low-light performance of the half-cell solar modules is impressive.

What is the structure of the half-cell solar modules?
Halfcut solar modules not only have advanced half cells.
Another striking feature is the separate connection of the individual half cells in two separate current paths.
For this purpose, the half cells of a segment are connected in series in six strings.
The two segments are then connected together in the middle using a parallel circuit.
The design of the half-cell modules has the particular advantage that the low-light behavior changes fundamentally.
Photovoltaic modules with regular full-cell interconnection no longer produce any electricity, even if some solar cells are only slightly shaded!
Half-cell modules, on the other hand, can still generate electricity.
The unshaded half of the module continues to generate yields thanks to the clever design.
Even with partial shading in the morning or evening, a remaining output of 50 % can still be expected with an upright installation.
The two independent current paths, installed in the center of the module, enable a 50% increase in output with partial shading, thanks to the effective wiring of the freewheeling and bypass diodes.
