Photovoltaics for the Englischer Garten in Munich
On the buildings of the Hirschau beer garden in the Englischer Garten in Munich, 198 solar modules from Solar Fabrik generate 83 kWp of sustainable electricity. This reference project demonstrates how historic preservation, architecture, and modern photovoltaics can be successfully combined.
Historic preservation meets modern solar technology
In the heart of the Englischer Garten, one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, the traditional Hirschau beer garden relies on sustainable energy production. The Hirschau buildings are part of a listed ensemble that was extensively renovated and partially rebuilt in 2001 and 2002 – however, strictly within the requirements of historic preservation. The characteristic roofs with their plain tiles (beaver tail tiles) posed special requirements for the planning and design of the photovoltaic system. A system with a total output of 83 kWp was installed on the roofs. 198 Mono S4 Chroma Orange 420 W solar modules from Solar Fabrik were used, installed on a PV generator area of around 396 m².
A special feature of this project is the choice of modules: with their copper-red coloring, the Mono S4 Chroma Orange blend harmoniously into the roofscape and at the same time meet high design requirements in a sensitive architectural environment. The appearance is complemented by a color-coordinated mounting system from SL Rack, which blends just as inconspicuously into the roofscape.
The appropriate coloring was carefully tested in advance. Using small hand samples of the modules, the effect on the historic roofs could be assessed and the optimal color variant selected in close coordination. This enables renewable electricity generation without affecting the characteristic appearance of the buildings.
The system has two inverters and achieves a specific annual yield of 906 kWh/kWp. With an installed capacity of 83 kWp, it generates a significant portion of the required electricity in a climate-friendly way directly on site, thus making a major contribution to the operation of the beer garden.
